Today is the day that Google is launching a new algorithm that will give mobile-friendly websites better ranking to businesses that have optimized their websites for mobile users. Businesses that haven’t heeded Google’s long time warning may find themselves way down in the search result rankings today or soon after.
Google will penalize websites that fail to have easily clickable links or who force their mobile visitors to scroll side-wise to access the site’s content. Google started ranking mobile apps participating in App Indexing for signed-in users better in the mobile search results back in February.
The shift to mobile has been challenging for all businesses, but is one that has become urgently necessary as over half of all searches are now done on mobile devices.
According to an eMarketer report, ‘Key Digital Trends for 2015: What’s in Store—and Not in Store—for the Coming Year’, “2015 will see mobile search reach the tipping point—the stage at which the majority of spend, organic traffic and paid clicks comes from smartphones and tablets, surpassing traditional desktop/laptop search activity.”
Businesses can’t afford to ignore this change as Google has long been the world’s top search engine and a major contributor of driving traffic to websites.
